Freeview Boxes
Freeview boxes come in all shapes and sizes. People ask if there any difference in the quality of a freeview box on what you pay for them. Does it pick up more channels? Are the pictures any better on a freeview box that costs more? The answer is no, the pictures are the same quality and the number of channels you get are the same.
The difference you pay for a box is what extra outputs it has got on it. There are things called scart connections and modulators. Most cheap boxes, you will find that they only have one scart socket. This is fine when connected to the TV only, but if you want to record a certain channel, you have to take the scart lead out of the TV and put it into the video recorder.
So, sometimes it’s best to get a freeview box with two scart sockets, so that you can put one scart lead into a television and the other into a video recorder. This will allow you to record the freeview channel without having to take the scart lead out of the television. But you still can only watch the channel you are recording because the freeview box only has one tuner.
A good device to have on a freeview box is a modulator. This will let you pipe the signal from a freeview box around your house, so if you feed the signal from the freeview box into a distribution amplifier, this can take the signal to two, four, six, eight televisions around your house.
The other use for a freeview box with a modulator is if you have an old type television without a scart socket. This means you can tune one of the channels of the television into the modulator, so you don’t have to use a scart. This will solve a lot of the problems of tuning an old type TV without a scart socket into a freeview digital television.
There is another type of freeview box you can get pay per view channels. This is a box called a top-up TV box. The difference between this box and a freeview box is that it has got a card slot. This means that you can insert a card with a chip on it that allows you to watch pay-to-view channels. Sometimes it’s best to get one of these boxes, first of all, as you can tune your into the free to view channels, but have the facility to put a card into your box, if you want to watch the pay-to-view channels in the future. There is another freeview box coming onto the market place at the moment that has two tuners a hard disk recorder. This box will let you record one freeview channel while watching another. This freeview box will also let you pause a channel while you are watching it, answer the door, come back to watching your TV 20 minutes later where you left off. So this means that the freeview box is playing, as well as recording the programme you are watching. |
